MARYSVILLE – The Marysville boys basketball team remained winless in conference play after suffering a 67-53 loss to Westerville Central Friday night in our True Oldies 1270 Game of the Week, presented by Union Rural Electric.
The Warhawks used first half runs of 12-0 and 16-0 to create separation from the Monarchs and led comfortably the rest of the way. Central’s balanced attack kept Marysville guessing on the defensive end as four Warhawks scored in double figures, led by Joeleon Merchant’s 18 points.
Keyed by three-point jumpers from Steve Romesburg and Corey Gould, Marysville scored 12 straight points in the first quarter to build an early 12-4 advantage. Central responded with a 12-0 run that spanned the end of the first and start of the second quarters. Midway through the second quarter, Marysville’s Logan Roston was fouled attempting a three-pointer. He made all three free throws to give the Monarchs an 18-17 advantage. That’s when Central scored 16 straight points, building a 33-18 lead. Marysville center Craig Runyan got saddled to the bench with foul trouble and the Warhawks took advantage, scoring often in the post while keeping Marysville off the board for a four-minute stretch. Romesburg sunk a three-pointer as the halftime buzzer sounded to pull Marysville within 10 at 33-23.
Back-to-back three pointers by Corey Gould midway through the third quarter brought the Monarchs within 43-38. But that was as close as they would come. Central maintained their distance, leading 51-40 after three quarters. Marysville never got closer than eight points in the fourth period.
Romesburg scored 15 points to pace Marysville. Craig Runyan added 10.
The Monarchs fall to 3-12 overall, 0-10 in the OCC Cardinal Division. They host Bellefontaine Tuesday night.
Westerville Central snapped a three game losing streak with the win. They are now 7-8 overall and 4-6 in league play.
Our next broadcast is Friday February 3 when the North Union Wildcats host MOAC rival Marion Pleasant. Air time is set for about 7:30 p.m.
